“You can’t lose healthy weight by not eating” – Charles Lloyd

How to NOT diet eat well and still lose weight The Fat Trifecta

As explained in an earlier blog, the most important meal of the day is breakfast, skipping it “kills” your metabolism.

In a 1993 study by the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) on people who wanted to lose weight and keep the weight off, there was a stipulation that the participants had to be at least 18 years old and had to maintain a minimum 30 pound weight loss for at least one year. At the end of the one year, follow-up questionnaires were handed out to the people who successfully kept the weight off and what they actually did to keep the weight off.

Breakfast in the morning

The thing with NWCR is they only survey people who were actually successful in losing weight and keeping the weight off for at least a year, so this is not a survey of the general population. An overwhelming number of people who took the NWCR survey (over 75%) ate breakfast. Again, as I explained before, eating breakfast is doing just that – breaking your fast from the night.

By eating breakfast you are breaking your metabolism from “Food Fast” mode to “Burn Food” mode.

Starvation

When most people think of breakfast they think of a cup of coffee and English muffin, or some yogurt with some fruit crap sprinkled on the top of it, like you see in the commercials. This is fine if you’re like a bulimic 40lb adult where anything you eat will help. But for normal adults, it’s the equivalent of giving an Altoid to a whale – you’re not doing much. Then as the day goes on they ramp up their food intake. By dinner they are eating a whole slab of baby back ribs, mashed potatoes and some other crap. WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!

Eat like a Child

This is the exact opposite of what you need to be doing. If you’re going to eat huge, eat huge in the morning or whenever you first wake up. Breakfast is the meal that is going to get you through the day. In this case, eat like a child…children almost always want to eat a huge breakfast, this will get them through a day of recess, running, scraping their knees, etc. By the end of the day you practically have to force them to eat. I remember as a child this was my exact experience. I always wanted to eat huge in the morning, by dinner time food was my least concern, a chore at this point. This is how children naturally “Not diet, eat well and still lose weight.” Calorie consumption should be the highest in the morning when you need it and lowest at night when you don’t need it.

Unfortunately, with most adults, this is the opposite of what they do. They eat practically nothing in the morning when they need it and everything at night when their body is already tired from the day and doesn’t need a whole lot more energy. This is a recipe for disaster, weight gain and fat storage.

The Fat Trifecta – Carbohydrates, Protein, Alcohol & Fat

The fat trifecta is not really a trifecta at all, it’s more of a four-fecta or a quadfecta, but I like trifecta because it sounds better. In a physiological breakdown sense, your body breaks down carbohydrates, protein, alcohol and fat into four different macronutrients.

Out of these four, alcohol is your body’s favorite form of energy. Meaning that of the four macronutrients, alcohol will do the most damage in fat storage than any of the others if not used. Then protein, carbohydrates, and lastly, ironically and predictably enough, fat. This is the reason why my last blog was on alcohol.

So what the heck does this have to do with the prices of Concord grapes in Sudan? I’m going to feed you baby birds just wait. As I just wrote above you should “Eat like a child.” This is how a lot of people get their excess fat storage. Usually when people eat dinner they will have a big old steak (protein/fat), mashed potatoes (carbs), beer/wine (alcohol) and then a dessert (more carbs & fat). If you just read and understood what I wrote above, you can probably see the plane crash coming. There is a ton of excess alcohol; dense carbs, fat and protein, if none of that stuff is used after dinner guess where and how this excess energy is going to be stored? Yep, as fat in my *.*

So, if you’re going to eat big, eat big in the morning and save yourself the excess pain of going on yet another diet.

This concludes part 4 of the series entitled How to NOT diet eat well and still lose weight The Fat Trifecta.
