How to use Protein Supplements for Better Fitness

When starting a weight loss regimen or just working towards a better general health, it is important to know why adding a protein supplement to your diet is important. Well, it is because protein has many benefits and if you body doesn’t get enough of it from other sources, like food, a protein supplement is a great substitute.  The benefits of adding a protein supplement to your diet include better muscle building and fat loss, and without adequate amounts of protein in your body, you will need to work harder since the protein won’t be there to help out.

The first step in using protein supplements to improve your fitness is to decide what exactly you would like to achieve while using a supplement. Are you looking to build muscle? Or perhaps you would like to shed a few pounds? Whatever your goal, there is a specific protein supplement to help you; all you need is to do a little work and find the best one for your needs. For example, if you want to build muscle, choosing a whey-based formula will be most beneficial for you; egg and soy based are best for those who are looking to lose some fat.

If your goal is to build muscle, then first you must understand that building muscle involves three different components that work together for one goal. The first is a strength training program in which you work the particular muscle groups you are looking to build. Next, figure out how many calories you will need to take in per day, keeping in mind that to successfully build muscle you need to take in more calories than you burn each day. Finally, decide how much an appropriate amount of protein for your individual body is, and take it in at regular intervals.  On the other end, if your goal is to lose weight, you have a few different steps to follow. First, create a rigorous exercise routine that will get your heart rate up and the sweat coming out, because if you don’t sweat you can’t lose! Then, do the opposite of the muscle builders – eat less calories than you burn per day. And finally, to lose fat by adding more protein to you died, many experts recommend a diet containing 25 to 35 percent protein for weight loss. Once you reach your goal, amounts between 20 to 25 percent of your total diet will help you maintain your weight. In both cases, the protein should be high quality protein, as it will be the easier for your body to absorb than the lower end products.

Now that you have decided what you want to benefit from using protein supplements, it’s time to decide what type you would like. There are many options available, but the two we will focus on are whey proteins versus egg and soy powders. As mentioned above, it is recommended that muscle builders use a whey protein over the others, mostly because it can be absorbed very quickly after working out. Whey powders are also thought to be more efficient than egg or soy because it has the highest biological value of them all, which means it promotes the greatest gain of lean muscle. The main drawback with whey protein is that it is only active for a short time after consumption, which is why it needs to be consumed quickly and in regular intervals during exercise sessions. The other two options, egg and soy, are a bit different from the muscle builder formula. These protein supplements consist mostly of natural ingredients and are much easier for the body to digest. Also, egg and soy protein have unique benefits that the whey just doesn’t offer, such as being acceptable for vegetarian and (soy only) vegan dieters that solely wish to lose weight. But, no matter which type you choose, remember that it is most beneficial to drink it at least one hour before exercising, and for the muscle builders, consume again every two to three hours.

Now that you are armed with all the knowledge you need to choose and use a protein supplement the best, just remember one last thing – all the protein in the world won’t help you if your body is deprived of other nutrients. So remember to take a multivitamin and to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and solid protein such as fish and chicken to best benefit your body as well.
