Real Concerns About Becoming A Beachbody CoachThis post is discusses a common misconception and Real Concerns About Becoming a Beachbody Coach.

Real Concerns About Becoming A Beachbody Coach

If you are interested in becoming a Beachbody Coach, but are still on the fence about the whole thing, this is an actual e-mail conversation that I had with one of the newest coaches on my team, Dan.

Synopsis:

Although Dan had heard about becoming a Beachbody coach, he has been on the fence for quite some time. He knew about the opportunity from being a user of P90X and Insanity, but he had a few questions and concerns. One question, and probably the main question, was: Since there are so many Beachbody Coaches is it too late to make a decent living? Does the Beachbody thing REALLY work, not just somebody talking about it, like actual real people. Dan first responded to my post How to make money with Beachbody – Retail – Part 1.

Real Concerns About Becoming A Beachbody Coach

Here is our email conversation back and forth, maybe some of you can relate, in the same situation, and have the same concerns. Here I go over those concerns.

Dan,

Thanks for dropping by my website. Let me ask you a question, how did you find out about the whole Beachbody thing?
Thanks,
Charles

Hi Charles,

First off… I’m subscribed to your email lists, and I always look forward to the info you send out. Good information, and the sarcastic/funny tone keeps me smiling 🙂

To answer your question… I did P90x for the first time in fall 2009. Loved it, but then got busy and slacked off. Decided to tackle insanity in spring of 2011.  Loved it also… But I love ice cream too, and that wins the battle way too often. Throughout all of this time, I have pulled out these workouts from time to time, but I did the full programs at those specific times.

I pre-ordered P90x2, started in January and completed it in March. Have been doing an insanity/p90x hybrid for the past two months, and really hoping to stick with it long-term. Trying to make it a permanent habit! Nutrition is the harder part for me, but I’m sure most people struggle there. I just really like to eat. I’m not overweight, but definitely not toned like I would like to be either.

So. I would be motivated to be a coach to help others succeed, and to keep myself motivated also. Making money would be great, though I would feel “satisfied” if I was at least breaking even. As I said in my post, I have thought about being a coach for a while, but obviously don’t want to feel like I’m throwing money away either.

Probably a lot more info than you wanted to read!

Dan

Hey Dan,

Thanks for subscribing. Some people like my website, others…not so much. What do you do for a living if you don’t mind my asking? My background is military and government contracting.

You are definately not the only one of my readers who stuggle with diet, I would guess probably about 80 to 90% of the people who come to my website, or my Beachbody page have the same issue….Chocolate Chips cookies and ice cream is delicious!

Most of the people who start coaching, pretty much started out the same way you did. If I remember correctly I think I  became a coach in the fall of 2009. I first learned about P90X in 2008, but had no clue about what exactly what they did. Then by some crazy thing, a girl named Monica (one of the original Beachbody Coaches) told me that you could actually make some money being a representative for Beachbody. So that is I got in.

So lets just say hypothetically you were to decide to join, What would the reason be that you decided to? People give me all kinds of different reasons why, some people don’t really care about the money, but just want their supplements paid for every few weeks. Some people join so they can stay motivated. Some people join for the money. Some people join so they can help others. Basically everybody has a different reason for joining. I joined mainly because I can help others who struggle with health and fitness, and I can make some money while doing it.

So since I know that you don’t want to waste you money on something that may not pan out, what exactly would you be looking to accomplish if you decided to join? What would you expect (if anything) out of becoming a Coach based on what you already know about it? To tell you the truth, it works for some people and others not so much, depending on thier mindset.

Keep up the good work!

Charles

Hello again,

Thanks for the reply.  To answer your questions:

I am currently an assistant principal at a high school.  I was a choir teacher before this.  I love my job, even with all of the stress and headaches that come up daily.  I was also enlisted in the national guard for a while, so I can relate to the military life!

If I were to join… I guess the two main reasons I would want to would be to help keep myself and others motivated, and to help me get certain supplements covered as well (I really want to try Shakeology, but that stuff is expensive!).  I would certainly enjoy making money as well, but I think as long as I was breaking even financially, I would be ok with that.  Being a professional educator, I enjoy helping others grow and succeed, so working to help other people improve and feel better about themselves is certainly a motivator for me as well.

I guess if I joined, I would expect to make at least enough money to cover my costs of being a coach and getting Shakeology (and maybe Results/Recovery) each month, maybe a bit more; and I would want to feel like I was keeping myself motivated to make healthy choices, as well as helping others do the same.

I’m really curious how you got started, and built up a strong enough following to make the kind of money you do from this system.  The fact that you just started in 2009 is motivating to me; I feel like it might be hard to start now and expect success, with so many other coaches already out there.  But maybe you don’t think that’s the case at all?  How are you able to recruit people to join under you?  Has your large internet presence just started doing the work for you now?

Thanks again for talking with me!

Dan

Hi Dan,

For some reason a lot of educators are attracted to the Beachbody thing for some reason, the girl that sponsored me Monica, she is an ex-elementary school teacher. My cousin is also a elementary school teacher but he is a power lifter.

Here is what I think. Since you have a definite goal, I think it could work for you, but it wont be without work. Based on what you said this is what you are looking for:

  1. Pay for your supplements, including the Shakeology
  2. Keep yourself motivated
  3. Make some money, not sure the exact amount but lets just say $500 per month for argument sake.

What I tell most people who are on the fence is to sign-up, but don’t just sign and just leave it up to chance, sign-up but give yourself an exit strategy. Meaning set a day, say maybe 1 year from today, to reach those very specific goals, I try to be upfront with everything when it comes to this Beachbody thing. Just like my website, my Insanity, P90X or 10 Minute trainer reviews, I tell HONESTLY what I like about it, what I don’t like about it, whats good, what sucks, everything un-sugar coated.

So in the case of the coach thing, all the things that you want are more than attainable, but none of it is going to just fall into your lap. I will help you become successful. Beachbody basically gives you a “Game Plan” on how to be successful, support, other successful people to talk to, so its not like you are ever in the dark with anything. Being a principal at a high school, I cant imagine you being shy, or even afraid of work, I also doubt that someone just handed you the assistant principal position at your school because they though you were a nice guy. The Coach thing is really no different.

So back to what I was thinking, sign-up, but sign up with one foot out the door, meaning if you don’t reach the exact specific goal of having the Coach thing, pay for your supplements, keeping yourself motivated to help others and stay in shape, and to make whatever specific amount of money you want per month, whether it be $100, $250, $500, $1000, $5000 or whatever amount you specifically want per month/week (Beachbody pays weekly) then leave. Some people find out that its something they can make a full time income on it, some people find out that its not something that is for them, and some people just like to do it on the side.

It cost money to sign up as a Beachbody Coach $40 to be exact, then there are monthly fees that are due @ $15 per month which give you a couple different websites. After a certain level of success, Beachbody “gives” you customers this is the point were you really start to see some money come in, honestly that amount is different for everybody. But lets say you want $500 per month, that amount will practically fall into you lap.

I only started my website in 2008, Christmas day to be exact. I and joined Beachbody in 2009, I think my website has definitely helped me grow my company, I think it has helped because people know (from what they have told me) that I am not just trying to position myself for a paycheck. I mean I practically give away all the workout DVD’s in word format free, now while people may or may not like exactly what I say, but I think they definitely appreciate the amount of work that was put into trying to help other people out without asking for anything in return. BTW that is exactly how I approach the Coach thing, I will tell them “Hey I do this Beachbody Coach thing, come check it out, you may like it, you may not, but its worth a few minutes of your time”.

My goal for the website is only to help other people with health and fitness, I have never really head a problem with weight, eating excessive amounts of bad food, or not working out, but I have had problems with other aspects in my life, that people who I have known, still know, or total strangers have REALLY helped me out, to be be honest I feel indebted to these people. The best way to pay these people back is to pay it forward, somebody out there needs help, maybe its me, maybe its you, maybe neither of us. I know that not everybody is not going to jive with everything I say or do, but I am not trying to help those people, my goal is to help people who “get” me, not to be liked by everybody.

I don’t think its even remotely too late to get started, this is a people business, so honestly people have to believe in you before they believe in Beachbody, Beachbody is just a system, a logo, and a company. You already have a circle of influence, that circle of influence are the people who like what you are saying, doing, and are about, you can be successful in this business just by simply being you and sharing your story, its just a matter of putting yourself out there, if you d,o and do it consistently you will be successful in obtaining your goal.

Who is your current coach you are assigned to? Sorry about my run-on sentences, and comma splices. I just wrote this off the cuff,  I bet you can tell I’m not an English major, and my editor hasn’t chastised me for all my writing mistakes 🙂

Charles

Good evening,

I am actually not sure who my current coach is.  I have been associated with two so far, I think, but haven’t really interacted with either, and didn’t feel much of a fit.  When I would ask for advice/feedback, just wasn’t real impressed with what I got.  Usually just a quick half-answer to my question, and then a sales pitch to sign up to be a coach and start auto-shipping Shakeology… not exactly the motivation I was looking for!

Your quick assessment of what I’m looking for is pretty dead on, I think.  I am well aware that it costs money to sign up and remain a coach, which is why I have gone back and forth so much about signing up.  But I like your advice about trying it, and setting a time-limit to come back and assess where I’m at.  That makes sense to me.

If I do sign up, does Beachbody provide a decent amount of support to help you get started on the right foot?

I really appreciate all of your advice, and the time you’ve taken to respond so thoroughly to my questions.  It means a lot!  I think I’ve finally found the right coach for me! J

Dan

Me again,

I just talked it over with my wife, and I’m really leaning towards joining, with the plan you suggested (setting a time limit, then checking on my progress).  I will probably make my final decision this weekend, and go from there.

Let’s assume that I do sign up.  Anything you would recommend that I do right away?  I’m assuming I should probably place an order for Shakeology, since I haven’t even tried it yet.  Any flavors you’d suggest I start with?  Anything else I would want to do immediately to get things moving in the right direction?

Also… if I do sign up, I want to sign up through you.  You deserve the credit for my membership, considering the amount of time you’ve spent answering my questions and helping me out.  How do I make that happen?

Thanks Charles,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Yes there is a whole “Coach Academy” that is located in the Beachbody office, that takes you through the whole process of getting set-up, how to personalize your websites, how to make money with the tools that they provide, that is located under Business Essentials. Then there is an actual e-course on what we call the “Game Plan” basically it tells you how to get started, that course in itself will take you a few hours to get through, it took me days to get through. In that Game Plan, it talks about Social Media, creating your story, talking to people, setting up a FIT Club, Shakeology training, all kinds of cool stuff.

Then you have me, after you sign up I will need to schedule a time to talk to you, preferably on the phone, but if you rather not then email can suffice. I have a pretty good idea of what you are looking for, but I like to open up the line of communication with all the coaches I sponsor, I don’t ever want you to feel like you can’t call me, or if you need help with something.

My goal to make sure you achieve exactly what you are looking for, is to help you get to the first rank of emerald as quick as possible, and from my experience that usually takes a few phone calls to people you know that is interested in the whole coaching thing. Someone with a presence outside of Beachbody and Youtube videos, since my website is ranked pretty high in Google for Beachbody stuff, it holds some weight with peoples psychology, that I am not just some guy who has put together a website for the purposes of getting a paycheck, a lot of my articles have been around for years and I am very serious about it.

Also if you want you can have your wife on the phone as well, and maybe I can answer some questions for her and some of her concerns, and if I cant answer them I can get Monica (my sponsor and one of the original Beachbody Coaches) on the phone.

So the first thing I would suggest is to get a hold of Beachbody customer relations at [email protected] and tell them your name, then just tell them that you want to switch coaches to me my username is “charleslloyd” and my id#38138.

After that, if possible I want to set-up a time to talk to you (and your wife, if she wants) on the phone. Then we need to get you logged in to the Beachbody back office, and have you (and your wife) go through the Coach Academy together, I say her also because you are going to need her support if you want this to be a success, and to do that she needs to know what EXACTLY you doing. A lot of times peoples spouses will end up being a Coach, either during the process of the academy or after you get your first few hundred dollar check. From there you will receive a package from Beachbody that goes over your Getting Started right program.  From there we work together to help you get those three thing that you want out of Beachbody.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks Dan.

Charles

Well, I just took the plunge.  I decided it was time to give it a shot, so I guess we’ll see how it goes!  I’m anxious to get my materials so I can learn where to begin.

We can definitely talk on the phone at some point soon.  My days/evenings are kind of crazy at the moment with school ending soon, though I will have time this weekend if you wanted to talk then.  If you’d rather wait until I get my materials and look over those, that’s fine too.  I guess I don’t know what exactly you’re wanting to discuss.

Just FYI, I did not order any of the challenge packs, or any of the other things that Beachbody tries to upsell as you check out, other than I did go ahead and start HD of Chocolate Shakeology.  My wife and I have been wanting to try it, and it will be hard to promote a product I’ve never had!  I didn’t feel the need to order any of the workout packs, though, since I already own all of the ones I’d be interested in (I should have joined a long time ago; I could have saved some serious money just in the DVD’s I have!).

Wanted to tell you that I’m officially in, and ready to learn!  Talk to you soon,

Dan

Good deal Dan,

Just name a time during the weekend to talk and I will work my schedule around that. What I want to discuss is basically to get a better idea of what exactly you want out of the program. I mean I have a pretty good idea based on the previous email what what you are looking for, but its always better to talk on the phone even if it is only for a few minutes. The call shouldn’t take more than 10- 20 minutes.

In the meantime, try and come up with any and I really mean ANY questions you may have on what exactly we need to do, and what you need to do in order to get yourself started correctly, also is your wife going to be on the phone as well, if not, ask her if she has any questions about the program, me, the team of people that will help you in any way possible. Honestly anything.

In the meantime, if you are ready to get started you can start now by taking the e-course that is currently in your back office. Here is how you do it.

  1. First log-on to Teambeachbody.com and hover your mouse over the sections that says “Coach”
  2. When the drop down flash menu comes up, go to: Coach Online Office
  3. When you get into your office you will see a box right in the middle that says “Build a foundations for a successful business” “Take me to the Academy”…click on that box.
  4. Go through the first 4 lessons of the program.
  5. Make sure you have a look at all the “Reference Materials”
  6. Then when you are done with all of that you want to go to “My Courses” and go through all the courses, be sure you have a pin and paper handy to take notes on something you may be unclear on, the program does a very good job about explaining everything.

The course is not something you can do in 30 minutes, it will take you some time to get through the whole thing, as there is A LOT of material that they cover. This is the first thing you need to do. Make sure you write down any questions you may have. Also let me know what is a good time and day to call you. We’ll make this thing happen.

BTW, can I use our emails that we sent back and forth, I have quite a few people like yourself who are still on the fence about the whole Beachbody thing, and likewise I will place any new Coaches under you to help you build your business. Let me know.

Talk to you soon,

Charles
